Overheard from a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Philly?src=hash\">#Philly<\/a> middle school volunteer: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BestFieldTripEver?src=hash\">#BestFieldTripEver<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Gegv6iRbzr\">pic.twitter.com\/Gegv6iRbzr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Philadelphia Water (@PhillyH2O) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyH2O\/status\/839246116407427073\">March 7, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Held March 7, the effort targeted Philadelphia Parks and Recreation&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bartramsgarden.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bartram&#39;s Garden<\/a> site. This was the <strong>eighth year<\/strong> that United by Blue, a Philadelphia-based apparel company <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedbyblue.com\/pages\/cleanups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicated to clean water,<\/a> held a waterfront cleanup at Bartram&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schuylkillwaters.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schuylkill Action Network<\/a>, Philadelphia <a href=\"http:\/\/woodenboatfactory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wooden Boat Factory<\/a>, North Philadelphia&#39;s Mastery Prep Charter School and others gathered <strong>nearly 2,000 pounds<\/strong> of litter from the Schuylkill River shoreline <em>in just two hours<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Using heavy equipment, workers from PWD&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/waterways_restoration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waterways Restoration Team<\/a>\u00a0also gathered roughly 4,000 additional pounds of trash and tires that had been dumped on a path leading to the river.<\/p>\n<h4>Here&#39;s the trash breakdown:<\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recycling:<\/strong> 798 pounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tires: <\/strong>12 tires @ 240 pounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trash: <\/strong>5,075 pounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total: <\/strong>6,113 pounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Without the help of the volunteers and PWD crew, that trash would have been washed into the Schuylkill, harming the local wildlife. <strong>Thank you to all who pitched in!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>More Photos:<\/h4>\n<p><a data-context=\"true\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/32486538614\/in\/album-72157677699361754\" title=\"Philadelphia Water-United by Blue 2017 Cleanups Kickoff at Bartram Garden (142)\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Philadelphia Water-United by Blue 2017 Cleanups Kickoff at Bartram Garden (142)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2894\/32486538614_3bb9863af1_c.jpg\" width=\"710\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>The next United By Blue \/ PWD cleanup <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedbyblue.com\/blogs\/cleanups\/cobbs-creek-cleanup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will target Cobbs Creek<\/a> and is scheduled for April 4.<\/h3>\n<h5>Get more info on our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/CleanWatersPHLEvents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook Events page<\/a>.<\/h5>\n<p>You can also find more local Schuylkill River cleanup events (or add a new one) on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schuylkillscrub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schuylkill Scrub calendar<\/a>, and we&#39;ll post about more watershed cleanups here as spring comes around.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our first volunteer cleanup of 2017 with United By Blue had a great turnout\u2014and even got an honorary &#8220;Best Field Trip Ever&#8221;
