{"id":2070,"date":"2023-04-13T12:58:31","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T16:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/?p=2070"},"modified":"2023-04-13T14:41:34","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T18:41:34","slug":"2023-spring-cleanup-events-across-the-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/2023-spring-cleanup-events-across-the-region\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Spring Cleanup Events Across Philly Watersheds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">Spring has officially sprung \u2014 that means it\u2019s time to step outside, bask in warm weather, and volunteer with local cleanups!<\/p>\n<p>Your small part plays a <strong>massive role<\/strong> in the health of our environment.<\/p>\n<p>Popping up across the region this spring, these events help to keep litter out of sewer systems and waterways where debris, such as plastic bags and tires, can <strong>harm infrastructure and wildlife<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Check out several upcoming opportunities, including gatherings with the <strong>Philadelphia Water Department<\/strong> (PWD) and our <strong>Waterways Restoration Unit<\/strong>, which support these efforts with extra staff and equipment to remove debris.<\/p>\n<p>(And, don\u2019t forget to <a href=\"http:\/\/public.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/PAPHILAWATER\/signup\/15506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up for our event updates<\/a> for alerts about future watershed cleanups!)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Philadelphia Canoe Club Cleanup<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> Schuylkill River 600 Righters Ferry Rd Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> Participants can join PWD and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philacanoe.org\/event-5229574\">Philadelphia Canoe Club<\/a> to clean litter from the wooded banks of the Schuylkill River just across the banks from Manayunk and East Falls. This could include the removal of debris ranging from tires and abandoned household furniture to microplastics and snack packaging. Volunteers will meet at the water tower at Righters Ferry Rd. and Pencoyd Trail.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.philacanoe.org\/event-5229574\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Details for Philadelphia Canoe Club Cleanup!<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>16th Annual 2023 Philly Spring Cleanup Cleanup<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> Saturday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> Locations across the city. Interested participants can register a neighborhood or park projector register as a volunteer for an existing project at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/programs\/philly-spring-cleanup\/\">phillyspringcleanup.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> Launched in 2008, this is the largest city-wide, single-day clean-up event in Philadelphia. Since its kickoff 16 years ago, a total of 200,000 volunteers have removed more than 11.4 million pounds of trash and 950,000 pounds of tires from city streets at nearly 6,750 project sites.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2022-02-18-2022-philly-spring-cleanup-celebrating-15-years-of-community-cleaning-partnerships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Register for the Philly Spring Cleanup<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Multiple Weekly Cleanups at Tacony Creek Park<\/h2>\n<h3>Bennett Compost Cleanup in Tacony Creek Park<\/h3>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> \u00a05650 Rising Sun Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19120<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> All tools and supplies will be provided. The Tacony\/Tookany Watershed in particular has some exciting green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) planned for the park.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p40794\/\">Tacony Creek Stream GSI &amp; Stream Restoration Project<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Weekly Tacony Creek Care Day<\/h3>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. + one Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> \u00a0E Olney Ave &amp; E Clarkson Ave, Philadelphia 19120<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> This cleanup includes removing tires. All tools and supplies will be provided, including work gloves, snacks, and water. Restrooms are not available. Please bring a reusable water bottle if you have one.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/ttfwatershed.org\/event\/weekly-creek-care-day-philly-2023-04-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Register now!<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Love Your Park Events<\/h2>\n<p>Established to \u2018clean, green, and celebrate our public green spaces,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/loveyourpark.org\/\">Love Your Park<\/a>, a coalition comprised of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/departments\/philadelphia-parks-recreation\/\">Philadelphia Parks &amp; Recreation<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/myphillypark.org\/\">Fairmount Park Conservancy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/loveyourpark.org\/park-friends-network\">Park Friends Network<\/a>, is hosting a lineup of cleanups this spring. Sites include Cobbs Creek Park, Tacony Creek Park, and the Rail Park.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/loveyourpark.org\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find one near you<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Friends of Wissahickon Cleanups<\/h2>\n<p>The 2,000+ acre Wissahickon Valley welcomes volunteers to offer a little tender loving care to its creek and woodlands.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the Wissahickon regularly host various cleanup events throughout the spring and summer months.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/fow.org\/events\/tag\/volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check them all out<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Schuylkill Scrub<\/h2>\n<p>Every year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schuylkillwaters.org\/projects\/schuylkill-scrub\">Schuylkill Scrub<\/a> is a watershed-wide clean-up initiative that \u200btakes place from <strong>March 1 through May 31<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schuylkillwaters.org\/\">Schuylkill Action Network<\/a> coordinates the effort but gives credit to the many partners who help reach the common goal: cleaning as many miles of road, stream, and parkland in the Schuylkill watershed as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bFree supplies (trash bags, gloves, and vests) are provided through PWD, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penndot.pa.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">PennDOT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dep.pa.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">PA DEP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schuylkillwaters.org\/projects\/schuylkill-scrub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more or register a cleanup<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Darby-Cobbs Cleanups<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcva.org\/\">The Darby Creek Valley Association<\/a> will be hosting <strong>cleanups along the Darby-Cobbs Creek throughout April<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Several events are scheduled for Saturday, April 15, April 22, and April 29 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. These cleanups are popping up across the watershed, from Clifton Heights to John Heinz Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-primary btn-lg inline-block center white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcva.org\/watershed-cleanups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See all locations and register!<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Want to plan a community cleanup?<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to host a cleanup in your neighborhood, you can initiate an event through the City\u2019s Community Partnership Program (CPP). which loans equipment\/supplies and coordinates bagged trash pick-up after a cleanup event.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"phila.gov\/programs\/community-partnership-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more\u00a0\u2192<\/a><\/h5>\n<h4>Already have a cleanup planned?<\/h4>\n<p>Send your spring community cleanup events to <a href=\"mailto:waterinfo@phila.gov\">waterinfo@phila.gov<\/a>, and we\u2019ll consider adding them to our running list!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>We hope to see you at one of these events!<\/h3>\n<p>Community cleanups are a great way you can help keep our communities and waterways clean \u2013 and they&#8217;re fun!
