The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) has two new ecological restoration projects taking place in the park:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p50254\/\">Benton Brook Sewer Protection and Stream Restoration<\/a> (PWD Project #50254)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p50225\/\">Sandy Run Sewer and Stream Restoration<\/a> (PWD Project #50225)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Construction in Pennypack Park<\/h2>\n<p>The two projects are just a few miles apart within Pennypack Park.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Project #50254,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p50254\/\">Benton Brook Sewer Protection and Stream Restoration<\/a>, started in<strong> August 2025<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"caption full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/benton-brook-stream-restoration.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/benton-brook-stream-restoration.jpg\" alt=\"A small natural stream surrounded by green, leafy trees, with rocks visible on the streambed through the clear water and a large rock, a small cave, and more green trees behind it.\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Residents will see equipment accessing the site along Benton Brook in two locations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Evarts St. between Benton Ave. and Castor Ave.<\/li>\n<li>Large St. between Bergen St. and Castor Ave.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For any questions about the Benton Brook project, contact <a href=\"mailto:eric.stales@phila.gov\">Eric Stales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Updating Sewers for a Healthier System<\/h3>\n<p>The goal for the project is to replace the outdated sewer system under the creek. A modern sewer will enhance the flow and accommodate future needs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;By removing invasive species, like bamboo, and reintroducing native plants, the project\u2019s vision is to restore the stream to a more natural setting,&#8221; <cite class=\"inline regular\">said Eric Stales, PWD Inspector on Project #50254.<\/cite> &#8220;Once the plants mature, the area will blend seamlessly into the landscape. It will appear as if the restoration work was never there \u2014 just a healthy, thriving habitat.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Project #50225<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p50225\/\">Sandy Run Sewer Protection and Stream Restoration<\/a>, started in <strong>September 2025<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/sandy-run-stream-restoration.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/sandy-run-stream-restoration.jpg\" alt=\"A small stream with rocks exposed on the streambed and a retaining wall beside it. Behind the stream is a short dirt wall with green shrubbery on top and a green wooded area.\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The work along Sandy Run will restore streams while protecting important PWD infrastructure. When entering the park from Ryan Ave. and Sandyford Ave, residents will see equipment accessing the site along Sandy Run.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the area improvements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replacing aging sewer pipes<\/li>\n<li>Repairing manholes to make the system stronger and more reliable<\/li>\n<li>Reconnecting the stream to its floodplain, which helps create a healthier, more stable habitat for plants and wildlife<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beyond the stream, the work will also improve the surrounding trail, making the park an even better place for the community to explore and enjoy.<\/p>\n<h2>Ecological Restoration Projects Help Improve Water Quality<\/h2>\n<p>Over time, the natural flow of streams has changed, causing damage to the surrounding lands. Damage to the area can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erosion of streambanks<\/li>\n<li>Loss of native plants and habitats<\/li>\n<li>Exposed underground infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Increased flooding<\/li>\n<li>Water quality issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PWD is restoring local streams to protect these natural resources and improve our neighborhoods.
