{"id":48,"date":"2017-10-30T13:52:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T17:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/1000-greened-acres-so-far-it-took-city\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:55:13","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:55:13","slug":"1000-greened-acres-so-far-it-took-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/1000-greened-acres-so-far-it-took-city\/","title":{"rendered":"1,000 Greened Acres (So Far)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"caption\"><a class=\"img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157665648474469\" title=\"1,000 (Green) Thank Yous from Mayor Kenney + PWD\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1,000 (Green) Thank Yous from Mayor Kenney + PWD\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4499\/38045228371_dd2f88369e_c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the Philadelphia Water Department designed the\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/documents_and_data\/cso_long_term_control_plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green City, Clean Waters<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>program, its scope has grown far beyond PWD since being approved by state and federal environmental agencies in 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As we&#39;ve seen over the last six years, to really transform Philadelphia&#39;s landscape on a scale that&#39;s big enough to have a real impact on our rivers, it takes more than just Water Department crews and contractors building rain gardens.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <strong>it takes a whole city working together<\/strong>, not to mention supportive partners on the state and federal level.<\/p>\n<p>That&#39;s why PWD, Mayor Kenney and our partners across City government put the spotlight on community groups, nonprofits, businesses, organizations and residents when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyMayor\/status\/918614554342457350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we celebrated the 1,000th Greened Acre<\/a><\/strong> created under <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The diverse group of people and organizations at the City Hall <strong>1,000 (Green) Thank Yous<\/strong> celebration was a real tribute to the dedicated coalition that&#39;s working to protect Philadelphia&#39;s water.<\/p>\n<p>Much more than a number, the 1,000 Greened Acres you helped us build represent a true transformation of our urban landscape, one that&#39;s having a positive impact on our waterways.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Over the past decade, all of you have helped Philadelphia become greener and our waterways become cleaner! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CleanWatersPHL?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CleanWatersPHL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/njFbD5gXuQ\">pic.twitter.com\/njFbD5gXuQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jim Kenney (@PhillyMayor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyMayor\/status\/918613441102872577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 12, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Today, green tools can keep nearly <strong>28 million gallons of polluted runoff out of our rivers <\/strong>during just one inch of rain&#8211;an amount that can add up to <strong>a billion gallons of stormwater and sewer overflows not going into our waterways<\/strong> annually.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">On Thurs. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyMayor?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PhillyMayor<\/a> celebrates the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CleanWatersPHL?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CleanWatersPHL<\/a> champs who helped <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Philly?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Philly<\/a> reach 1K <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GreenedAcres?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GreenedAcres<\/a>. A lot! \u2b07\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pSuHaUIM50\">pic.twitter.com\/pSuHaUIM50<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Philadelphia Water (@PhillyH2O) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyH2O\/status\/918226409126072331?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Without residents attending community meetings about projects or civic groups caring for local green tools through the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/community_partnerships\/programs\/soak-it-adoption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soak It Up adoption<\/a><\/strong> program, <strong>we would not be where we are today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same goes for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/smip-its-how-we-empower-people-invest-phillys-neighborhoods-and-rivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">businesses, large and small,<\/a><\/strong> using our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/wu\/stormwater\/Pages\/Grants.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grant programs<\/a><\/strong> to invest in green stormwater improvements on their properties\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026And for the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thenotebook.org\/articles\/2017\/10\/19\/green-schoolyard-officially-opens-at-adaire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schools across the city<\/a><\/strong> making rain gardens, permeable pavement and other green tools a central part of revitalizing schoolyards\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026And for the developers embracing the shared imperative of protecting our waterways by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/chop-gets-recognition-leading-river-protecting-green-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incorporating smart stormwater design into new projects<\/a><\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026And for our partners in departments throughout the City of Philadelphia, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/green_infrastructure\/programs\/green-parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like Parks and Recreation<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/green_infrastructure\/programs\/green_streets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streets<\/a><\/strong>, who work alongside us to bring landscaped green features to recreation centers, sidewalks, transit stations and more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It would take up your whole day to <em>actually<\/em> list all 1,000 of the \u201cthank yous\u201d we owe, but you get the idea\u2014<strong>it takes a whole city working together to achieve the big vision that is <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We still have nearly two decades to go before we reach our final goal\u2014<strong>9,564 Greened Acres by 2036<\/strong>\u2014and PWD looks forward to growing and strengthening the partnerships it will take to achieve rivers and creeks that are cleaner than they&#39;ve been in generations.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Extra: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PhillyWatersheds\/videos\/10154645369203791\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How do Green Tools Work?<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we&#8217;ve seen over the last six years, to really transform Philadelphia&rsquo;s landscape on a scale that&#8217;s big enough to have a real impact on our rivers, it takes more than just Water Department crews and contractors building rain gardens.
