Photo credit: Philadelphia Water. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to ever-increasing efforts to improve water quality, our rivers and streams are cleaner than they&#39;ve been in decades. So we don&#39;t blame you if you&#39;re tempted to take a plunge to beat the stifling heat gripping the city. But don&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, our waterways just aren&#39;t safe enough for swimming and wading due to the presence of pollutants and germs like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/crypto\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cryptosporidium<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/giardia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giardia<\/a>, which can cause serious health problems, especially for those with weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s a helpful flyer that outlines some of the dangers associated with recreation in urban waterways:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files2\/Don%27t%20Swim%20in%20Rivers%20and%20Streams_v5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Don't Swim in Philadelphia&rsquo;s Rivers and Streams\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/dont20swim20in20rivers20and20streams_485.png\" style=\"margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; display: block;\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em><a href=\"\/sites\/default\/files2\/Don%27t%20Swim%20in%20Rivers%20and%20Streams_v5_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click<\/a> for a larger image that can be printed and shared.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While swimming in our rivers is against the law, the city does provide great resources for those who want to cool down with a swim: neighborhood pools! You can <a href=\"http:\/\/oem.readyphiladelphia.org\/StayCoolMap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here to find a pool, sprayground or Cooling Center<\/a><em>(Sorry, this content is no longer available)<\/em>\u00a0near you.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#39;re involved with an organized event that includes recreation on the Schuylkill or Delaware,<a href=\"http:\/\/phillywatersheds.org\/what_were_doing\/documents_and_data\/live_data\/csocast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> check out our CSOcast page<\/a>, which tracks rain events and provides alerts about likely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/watershed_issues\/stormwater_management\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">combined sewer overflows<\/a> that can put untreated wastewater in\u00a0our rivers.
