Tires, TVs, lots and lots of plastic bottles and … a check for $32,000?<\/p>\n

You never know what you\u2019ll find when picking up trash along Philly\u2019s rivers.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that right: an actual check for over thirty grand<\/strong> was one of the many pieces of litter gathered by more than 100 volunteers assembled at Bartram\u2019s Garden<\/a> for a big cleanup on March 1, 2016. (Needless to say, the check, for a local school and already cashed, \u00a0won the award for \u201cweirdest find\u201d of the day.)<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the Philadelphia-based and \u201cocean-friendly\u201d clothing company United By Blue<\/a>, the volunteer effort was the first of a number that will be held along area rivers this spring.<\/p>\n

During yesterday\u2019s event, staff from Philadelphia Water, Parks and Recreation, the Schuylkill Action Network<\/a>, United By Blue and the green infrastructure design and maintenance firm AKRF<\/a> gathered 3,372 pounds of trash<\/strong><\/span> from the river banks in less than two hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Philadelphia Water's Waterways Restoration Team<\/a> returned to do some heavy lifting at an area of Bartram's Garden often impacted by illegal dumping and removed trash discovered during the cleanup that was too heavy or big for volunteers to grab alone.
