{"id":72,"date":"2018-08-14T19:21:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T23:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/2018-philly-fun-fishing\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:49:48","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:49:48","slug":"2018-philly-fun-fishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/2018-philly-fun-fishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Start a New Tradition with \u2018Philly Fun Fishing Fest\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">For many who enjoy the ancient pastime and sport of fishing, the passion comes from a place with deep roots in childhood: fishing with a dad or a grandmother, remembering just the right number of times to loop a line for that most steadfast of knots, remembering the little secrets they passed on for luring in the big one, remembering the frenzied excitement of that first catch, forever cherishing the picture snapped after.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, September 8, Philly families will have the perfect opportunity to create those memories\u2014even if no one in the family has a lick of fishing know-how.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now in its 14th year<\/strong>, the catch-and-release <a href=\"https:\/\/phillyh2o.info\/2018-fish-fest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Philly Fun Fishing Fest<\/strong><\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schuylkillbanks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schuylkill Banks<\/a> in Center City is an event that\u2019s special because it goes out of its way to be open to all, <strong>inviting experienced anglers and newcomers alike to see first-hand just how much our scenic Schuylkill River has to offer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All you have to do is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/phillyh2o.info\/2018-fish-fest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register right here<\/a> by Sept. 6<\/strong>: if you don\u2019t have your own, bait and rods are loaned on a first-come, first-served basis. As our partners, the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission will even lift fishing license requirements for that section of the river during <a href=\"https:\/\/phillyh2o.info\/2018-fish-fest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Philly Fun Fishing Fest<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With lots of friendly fellow anglers out there, it\u2019s the perfect spot to learn about the basics of fishing without investing tons of money and time. In fact, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillywatersheds.org\/sites\/default\/files2\/Philly%20Fun%20Fishing%20Festival%20Prizes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dozens of prizes<\/a> distributed each year for everything from first fish caught to most fish caught, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll walk away with some new gear from the sponsors at Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Bobs-Bait-Tackle\/154605027910470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob\u2019s Bait and Tackle<\/a> and Flambeau Outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public transportation<\/strong> and <strong>ADA access<\/strong> also make Schuylkill Banks the ideal location for a fest where the mission is getting more people hooked on the recreational offerings of Philly waterways.<\/p>\n<p>Lest you confuse \u201copen to all\u201d with \u201ckids\u2019 stuff\u201d when it comes to fish-catching potential, take note of this viral photo shared with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SchuylkillRiverGreenways\/\">Schuylkill River Greenways NHA on social media<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Wow! That&#39;s a sure sign of cleaner water, thanks in large part to dozens of conservation groups working hard for years. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B91c9JfzdI\">https:\/\/t.co\/B91c9JfzdI<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TZkaToCyuF\">pic.twitter.com\/TZkaToCyuF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 WilliamPennFdn (@WilliamPennFdn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamPennFdn\/status\/1027664606280470528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Yikes!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While most of the fish caught each year are a bit closer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/37055830296\/in\/album-72157686690379184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this size<\/a> than the, uh, 40-pound-alligator-with-gills seen above, Philly\u2019s western river is truly a prolific aquatic habitat that supports everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaredbrey\/status\/472018434331779072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">striped bass<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/columnists\/mike_newall\/20160515_Scientists__goal__Make_the_rare_American_shad_less_rare.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shad<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyH2O\/status\/870035110640459777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">otters<\/a> and beavers right in the downtown stretch of the 110- mile waterway.<\/p>\n<p>One of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainlinetoday.com\/Main-Line-Today\/September-2016\/The-Somewhat-Secret-History-of-the-Oldest-Social-Club-in-America\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most storied rivers<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkhistoryblog.org\/2014\/05\/13\/shad-the-founding-fish-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American fishing history<\/a>, the Delaware River\u2019s largest tributary is a body of water that connects Philadelphia both to the sea\u2014rising as much as eight feet at the Market Street Bridge, thanks to tides\u2014and the upstate ecosystems of streams and rivers that flow through mountains and forests. That geographical diversity translates to a diverse list of species thriving in the waters off Schuylkill Banks, and for anglers that diversity also means an added thrill &#8211; unless you can reel it in, you may never know what\u2019s tugging on the other end of your line.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the aforementioned striped bass and shad, fish spotted passing through the nearby fish ladder upstream at the Fairmount Dam include several catfish species, carp, trout, perch, freshwater large and smallmouth bass, sunfish, eels, and more. That abundance and a crowd that included a number of fans helped lure local fishing celebrity <strong>Leo Sheng<\/strong>, founder of the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCN87Pgwb2j03o6VoywPSJQg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Extreme Philly Fishing<\/em><\/a> YouTube channel, to last year&#39;s event.
