My name is <strong>Herbie Hickmott<\/strong>, and I work as a Senior Graphic Designer for PWD.<\/h4>\n<p class=\"big\">When I introduce myself and my job, I sometimes get a puzzled look\u2014<em>what does the Philadelphia Water Department need a graphic designer for?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I typically try to highlight some of the work our customers and the public may already know: branding experiences people engage with at events like <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/48417232582\/in\/album-72157709992430131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our traveling Philly Water Bar<\/a>, the <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/wu\/Water%20Quality%20Reports\/2018-Water-Quality-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-depth guides<\/a> we offer to highlight PWD\u2019s efforts to protect waterways and deliver quality drinking water, and <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyH2O\/status\/1107604860592099333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graphics supporting campaigns<\/a> to boost awareness about new assistance programs.<\/p>\n<p>My teammates and I rely heavily on visual storytelling. That often means showing a complicated process through a diagram or other visual to expand on written descriptions or instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Photography is incredibly important to us and having great images that capture the work that we do and the people who do it is an ever-present need.<\/p>\n<p>During the first half of 2019, we worked with professional photographers to capture the <em>truly<\/em> impressive and varied work that\u2019s being done around the clock by some of the <strong>2,000-plus folks who work for PWD.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below, I highlighted five of my favorite photos from those shoots, and included a few more so you can get a feel for what the photographers\u00a0captured. Here, Dante, an Environmental Scientist, is testing a sample for chlorine levels. I like that this image captures a moment during the test, and focuses on Dante\u2019s face\u2014showing just one of the many people responsible for ensuring our drinking water is top quality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\"><strong class=\"h4\">More:<\/strong> See the results of constant water quality testing done by our labs in the annual <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/wu\/Water%20Quality%20Reports\/2018-Water-Quality-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Quality Report<\/a>.<\/div>\n<hr id=\"birds-eye\">\n<h2>#2: The Bird&#39;s-Eye View<\/h2>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157710031659382\" title=\"The Bird\u2019s-Eye View\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Bird\u2019s-Eye View\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48431847247_09978a1840_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>What I love about this photo (and photoshoot) is the magnitude and scale it captures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We utilized a drone for this shoot, and it paid off. This photo was taken at one of our three drinking water treatment plants and highlights the large-scale infrastructure PWD is constantly investing in: <strong>big projects<\/strong> that are pieces of <strong>even larger, detailed strategic plans like our Drinking Water Master Plan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Our Planning and Research Unit looks many <em>decades<\/em> into the future to ensure <strong>Philadelphia has safe water now <\/strong>and when <strong>our grandchildren<\/strong> will need it.<\/p>\n<p>Photo shoots like this capture a moment in time when parts of those plans are being executed, and it is something we\u2019ve been doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157666160791453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since cameras could be first be used to document infrastructure-in-the-making<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When the project in the above photo is complete, the large blue pipes will be covered over. While they likely won\u2019t be seen again for decades, they will most certainly play an important part in the delivery and storage of the drinking water our city depends on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\">\n<p><strong class=\"h4\">More:<\/strong> Read this public summary of our <a href=\"https:\/\/phillyh2o.info\/water-master-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25-year Drinking Water Master Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr id=\"center-city\">\n<h2>#3: Just Another Afternoon in Center City<\/h2>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157710031788787\" title=\"Searching for a Source\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Searching for a Source\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48431826686_620e55fd44_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>In early June 2019, we were on the scene across from City Hall as PWD crews investigated the source of a leak.<\/strong> Steps from both City Hall and the Masonic Temple, hulking machines dotted the roadway and sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#39;t get a much more high-profile job site than an emergency repair taking place in the heart of our busy city.<\/p>\n<p>The crew worked quickly, and by late afternoon, the sidewalk was reopened for pedestrians and cars were zipping around City Hall once again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\">\n<p><strong class=\"h4\">Fun fact:<\/strong> On this spot once stood some of our very first water infrastructure: the Centre Square Water Works, built in 1801. Schuylkill River water was sent to homes through wood pipes,<a href=\"https:\/\/pwddev.wpengine.com\/blog\/resident-helps-spot-and-preserve-some-phillys-oldest-water-infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> like the one found under Spruce Street in 2016<\/a>, and cost residents about $5 a year, <strong>making Philly one of the first cities to make clean drinking water a municipal responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr id=\"working-24-7\">\n<h2>#4: Working 24\/7<\/h2>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157710031903612\" title=\"Sewer Relining\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sewer Relining\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48432015042_08d808b379_b.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>I witnessed an entirely different side of the work that PWD does as I stood on the sidewalk in Center City and watched workers begin a sewer relining project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A fairly recent innovation, sewer lining prevents leaking in older sewers, extending their life and avoiding the costs and disruption of tearing up streets. Because many residents haven\u2019t heard of the process and don\u2019t know what to expect, we wanted to document the work with photos.<\/p>\n<p>I met up with the crew around 9 p.m. on a quiet June night, unsure of what to expect. After some work to prepare the manhole and sewer, they unfurled\u00a0a massive liner\u2014think of something like one of those collapsible nylon play tunnels, only much tougher and about as long as a city block\u2014and fed it into the street opening.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I left after 1 a.m., the job took 24 hours of around-the-clock work from this dedicated crew, ensuring the people who use this busy Center City block could return to their daily routines as soon as possible. The resulting images highlight this entire process and capture the vivid colors and visual textures of our city at night.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\">\n<p><strong class=\"h4\">More:<\/strong> You can see many of our ongoing infrastructure maintenance work sites<a href=\"http:\/\/phl-water.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapSeries\/index.html?appid=9cb22d5b84574b238cf8b7daec41a3f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> on this map.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr id=\"investigators\">\n<h2>#5: The Investigators<\/h2>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157710031004286\" title=\"Dye Testing\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dye Testing\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48432049397_44e07a1257_b.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>This is from a shoot capturing what the industry calls a dye test.<\/strong> When we get a report about a leak in the street, a depression, or hole in the pavement, dye tests can help us determine the cause.<\/p>\n<p>By following dyed water, we can often tell if the problem is coming from an issue with a City sewer, a homeowner\u2019s pipes, or something else. The five workers in this crew were incredibly knowledgeable and efficient in doing the test, and went above-and-beyond to walk us through various situations and explain this process from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>I love that this image captures the physicality involved in much of our work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\">\n<p><strong class=\"h4\">Reminder:<\/strong> hydrants should only be opened by PWD or the Philadelphia Fire Dept. because they can break if opened the wrong way and the extreme water pressure can cause injuries. <a href=\"https:\/\/pwddev.wpengine.com\/blog\/summer-never-open-hydrants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more \u203a<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Want to see more images and videos of PWD at work?
