We\u2019re also benefiting from the information she picked up through the summit\u2019s Masterclass on adaptation, hosted by the City of Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<h3>Highlights from C40 Summit<\/h3>\n<div class=\"embed center caption\"><a title=\"Philly at C40 Summit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/49101411001\/in\/album-72157711878131132\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49101411001_ed2b98f952_b.jpg\" alt=\"Philly at C40 Summit\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Like the other City experts representing Philadelphia in Copenhagen, Rockwell was there because <strong>she and her peers are doing crucial work<\/strong> on the ever-changing frontier of <strong>climate change planning and policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cities around the world are leading the charge to make &#8216;the future we want&#8217;\u00a0a reality,&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Rockwell said<\/strong> from the summit back in October, citing the C40-social media rallying cry: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23TheFutureWeWant&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#TheFutureWeWant.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While in Copenhagen, Philadelphia delegates met with other officials to exchange ideas, discuss common challenges, and identify opportunities for collaboration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What can Philadelphia learn from Copenhagen about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ClimateChange?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ClimateChange<\/a>? Adapt with Green and Planning<\/h3>\n<p>Rockwell\u2019s focus during the gathering of nearly 100 global cities was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/international.kk.dk\/sites\/international.kk.dk\/files\/uploaded-files\/Cloudburst%20Management%20plan%202010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Copenhagen\u2019s Cloudburst Management Plan<\/em>,<\/a><\/strong> their citywide strategy to increase resilience to intense rainfall events and subsequent urban flooding\u2014a climate impact that Philadelphia and many other cities are<em> already<\/em> facing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Copenhagen\u2019s strategy focuses on an <a href=\"https:\/\/international.kk.dk\/artikel\/climate-adaptation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adaptive solution<\/a> that combines the implementation of large-scale, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c40.org\/case_studies\/cities100-copenhagen-green-infrastructure-prevents-flooding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blue-green infrastructure<\/a> projects that manage stormwater at the surface and with drainage tunnels where needed,&#8221;<strong>\u00a0Rockwell explained.<\/strong> &#8220;A unique aspect of this approach is to view stormwater as a resource and opportunity for innovative infrastructure design, something that Philadelphia is working towards through the implementation of our <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2011, Philadelphia&rsquo;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/sustainability\/greencitycleanwaters\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25-year program<\/a> is nationally recognized and uses green investment in neighborhoods to soak up stormwater while improving the sewer system and treatment plants. The effort is designed to reduce billions of gallons of sewer overflows annually and make neighborhoods greener and healthier places to live.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s also part of our three-fold approach to addressing the global issue of climate change:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mitigation:<\/strong> We are working to lessen PWD\u2019s contribution to climate change by saving energy and using renewable energy sources. (See the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/sustainability\/energy\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Water Department energy strategy<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding risks:<\/strong> We are studying climate science and performing a comprehensive risk assessment to understand what impacts climate change will have on Philadelphia\u2019s drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adapting: <\/strong>We will implement proactive, cost-effective strategies that incorporate climate considerations into the planning and design of projects so we can adapt to expected changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;There is no straightforward solution to climate adaptation, but through collaboration with cities and partners on scales from local to global, we<em> can <\/em>make meaningful strides,&#8221;
