The long-awaited ribbon cutting for our Community Cans project, a colorful effort to keep our streets and creeks clean, is set for December 12.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The goal:<\/strong> to reduce litter in a way that&#8217;s not only beautiful but also excites community members of all ages.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"embed center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Artsy trash can lids are the latest trend to get <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Philly?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Philly<\/a> thinking about sustainability. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q78c69lxhh\">https:\/\/t.co\/Q78c69lxhh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MetroPhilly (@MetroPhilly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetroPhilly\/status\/1204106774569246721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A grant provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/trash-free-waters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s Trash Free Waters Program<\/a>\u00a0helped us work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/delawareestuary.org\/\">Partnership for the Delaware Estuary,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muralarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mural Arts Philadelphia<\/a>, and the City&rsquo;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanphl.org\/communitycans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0bring this idea to life. With this grant, 50 trash cans are being\u00a0distributed between\u00a0Juniata Park and Southwest Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<h4>The brightly colored receptacles will be celebrated at two ribbon-cutting events on <strong>December 12<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Southwest Philly:<\/strong> 1:15 p.m. at LeMandique African Restaurant at 6620 Woodland Ave<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juniata:<\/strong> 4:00 p.m. at Ferko Playground, 1101 E. Cayuga Street<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>While these amenities will serve local corridors for years to come, the process of making them was a big part of the impact they will have. The trash can lids were designed and painted by people from those very communities.<\/p>\n<p>In the Southwest neighborhood, the <a href=\"http:\/\/southwestcdc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southwest Community Development Corporation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immigrationadvocates.org\/nonprofit\/legaldirectory\/organization.393267-Africa_Cultural_Alliance_of_North_America_Inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African Cultural Alliance of North America<\/a> (ACANA) led the way with lids painted beautifully by the students of Tilden Middle School and local artist <strong>Rhonda Davis<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\" style=\"margin: 1em auto;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPhillyWatersheds%2Fvideos%2F444754056211394%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=267\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In Juniata, the <strong>Tookany\/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership<\/strong>\u00a0and artist\u00a0<strong>Jay Coreano\u00a0<\/strong>hosted a community paint day where\u00a0families came out and designed the can lids. Read about <a href=\"https:\/\/ttfwatershed.org\/2019\/10\/30\/community-cans-bring-juniata-park-neighbors-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their project on the TTF blog.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em;\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This Thursday we&#8217;ll have a ribbon cutting for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CommunityCans?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CommunityCans<\/a> project with partners <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DelawareEstuary?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DelawareEstuary<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CleanPHL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CleanPHL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhillyH2O?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PhillyH2O<\/a>. \ud83d\udeae These new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CayugaStreet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CayugaStreet<\/a> trash bins will decrease the amount of litter in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JuniataPark?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#JuniataPark<\/a> and in our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/creek?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#creek<\/a>. Very often, trash and waste that\u2019s left on our sidewalks ends up in the very watersheds that supply our drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>Community Cans,<\/strong>\u00a0we now\u00a0have many more trash cans in key areas\u00a0possible and\u00a0beautiful pieces of artwork that local residents use\u00a0with pride. As community partners, <strong>TTF Watershed<\/strong> and <strong>Southwest CDC <\/strong>have also committed to emptying the new cans, boosting local engagement with anti-litter efforts.<\/p>\n<div
