{"id":818,"date":"2020-05-08T15:32:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T19:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/rosa-tap-murals\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:33:02","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:33:02","slug":"rosa-tap-murals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/rosa-tap-murals\/","title":{"rendered":"Murals Promote Tap Where More Skeptics Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">We are constantly monitoring our water across the city and testing at our lab to ensure we\u2019re sending you high-quality tap, and we make that information available through our <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/water\/wu\/Water%20Quality%20Reports\/2018-Water-Quality-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Quality Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"big\">That <strong>scientific data <\/strong>is great. It\u2019s not, however, always the sort of show-stopper that would grab your attention and<strong> start a conversation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly <strong>40 percent of Philly residents<\/strong> drinking bottled water, we want to have conversations about how <strong>excellent<\/strong> the water we send to every home truly is. That means we are always looking for ways to challenge Philadelphians\u2019 often misconceived ideas about what comes from their faucets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tapping into our imaginative side<\/strong>, we\u2019re sharing facts about the city\u2019s drinking water through something a bit more eye-catching than reports\u2014<strong>public art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to elevate awareness of the city\u2019s top-quality tap water, we partnered with <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.muralarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mural Arts Philadelphia<\/a> to create works of public art in communities where buying bottled water is most common. The murals have a simple theme: <strong><em>Drink\u00a0More\u00a0Tap<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/49584499811\/in\/album-72157712292219701\/\" title=\"Murals Video\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Murals Video\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/31337\/49584499811_635e4318c5.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Penrose Recreation Center<\/strong> at 12th Street and Susquehanna Avenue and the <strong>Cruz Recreation Center<\/strong> at 6th and Master Streets were selected as sites to feature new murals promoting the benefits of drinking Philly tap. With portraits of residents infused in the designs, they have an especially local touch.<\/p>\n<p>Both are being created by artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calo1.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Calo Lopez Rosa<\/strong><\/a> and were started in 2019. Penrose is\u00a0scheduled for completion in summer 2020, and the Cruz mural is scheduled to wrap up by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>With Stay At Home measures still in place, all work and community outreach are being done with safety in mind. <strong>Online meetings with residents are planned for May 14 and 15<\/strong> \u2013 members of the community who want to join should <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"mailto:maura.jarvis@phila.gov?subject=Cruz%20Mural%20Meeting\">email to request an invite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><a data-context=\"true\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/49249806741\/in\/album-72157712292219701\/\" title=\"Penrose Rec Center Drinking Water Mural\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Penrose Rec Center Drinking Water Mural\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49249806741_f9fcdb124a_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3>Testing the Waters<\/h3>\n<p>The <em>Drink More Tap<\/em> projects were inspired by annual customer surveys asking residents about their relationship with tap water. Roughly <strong>40 percent<\/strong> of Philadelphians report drinking bottled water at home instead of tap. An additional layer shows a <strong>correlation between bottled water use and poverty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cWe are interested in exploring other tools to get people\u2019s attention around this topic,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says <strong>Tiffany Ledesma<\/strong>, PWD\u2019s Public Engagement Team Manager.<\/cite> \u201cWe believe strongly in the power of public art and especially murals. In Philly, we can create a space to have conversations and build trust through the art-making process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The murals were created by working closely with Philly communities where, according to survey responses over the last four years, <strong>bottled water use is most common<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cWe have a really awesome opportunity to work with Mural Arts and, hopefully, make this conversation bigger,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says <strong>Maura Jarvis, <\/strong>Community Outreach Specialist with PWD.<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Partner Projects<\/h3>\n<p>Alongside PWD and Mural Arts representatives, Penrose hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157712292219701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community painting days<\/a>, which drew volunteers from the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cI think (the mural) <strong>starts that conversation<\/strong>, and it&#39;s a lasting conversation, especially when children get to work on it,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">said Penrose paint-day participant and 2019 Drink Philly Tap ambassador <strong>Michael Wilcox<\/strong>, a North Philly-based environmental and community revitalization advocate.<\/cite> \u201cIt\u2019s a lasting effect\u2014even on the neighborhood\u2014 when they get to see <strong>those murals and their longevity<\/strong>. A lot of them do <strong>stand the test of time<\/strong>.
