Choose something healthy that you haven\u2019t tried before, and experiment with how time and the amount of ingredients changes flavors.<\/p>\n<h3>Materials:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cold water<\/strong> from your tap<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glass jars<\/strong>, pitchers, or large drinking glasses<\/li>\n<li>A knife and cutting board (and adult supervision!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Different healthy ingredients<\/strong> to add to your tap water, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>Fruit or vegetables, like apples, oranges, lime, lemon, strawberries, carrots, cucumbers, melons<\/li>\n<li>Tea bags or tea leaves<\/li>\n<li>Spices and herbs such as mint leaves, thyme leaves, fresh ginger chunks or hibiscus leaves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"semibold\">For some activities:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>A pot or microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup to heat water in<\/li>\n<li>A cheese grater, shredder, food processor, or some extra time and patience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Some of the recommended materials listed above, gathered on a kitchen counter. How does that affect the flavor? Which do you like best?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try different concentrations<\/strong> of flavoring by using more fruit slices in a jar, or only a few. Which concentration do you prefer?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Activity 2: Carrot On<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Shred carrots<\/strong> with a grater, pulse in a food processor, or chop them into very thin strips.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add shredded carrots<\/strong> to a jar, and fill the rest of the way with <strong>cold tap water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Refrigerate<\/strong> for 1 hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strain<\/strong> out the carrots, or just drink and enjoy!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>Experiment:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Try different concentrations<\/strong> of flavor by using more or less carrots, or leaving the infusion in the refrigerator longer, like you did in Activity 1. What concentration of flavor do you like best?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Why do you think we shredded the carrots<\/strong>, instead of just slicing them like we did in Activity 1? Try it and see what happens if you want!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Activity 3: Spice It Up<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Boil 2 cups of water.<\/strong> Start with cold water from the tap, and heat it on the stove or in the microwave until it starts bubbling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add a handful<\/strong> of mint leaves or a couple small chunks of fresh ginger (about 1 tablespoon).<\/li>\n<li>Let the mixture <strong>steep<\/strong> (sit and infuse) for <strong>5 minutes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strain<\/strong> or scoop out the mint\/ginger and pour into a mug to drink hot, or a jar to go in the refrigerator.<\/li>\n<li>Try drinking it hot, like tea, or refrigerate for 1 hour.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>Experiment:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>See how much (or little) mint you can use<\/strong> to flavor the water &#8211; mint is a flavor that can be diluted a lot and you still taste it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What other spices might work?<\/strong> How about thyme, basil, hibiscus flowers, or cinnamon sticks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Keep the Flavor Flowing<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider combining some of the flavorings. Try strawberries with thyme or ginger with carrots or apple!<\/li>\n<li>Try using tea bags or tea leaves, either following Activity 3 or adding them to a jar of cold water and leaving it in the refrigerator overnight &#8211; on their own or with other flavoring!<\/li>\n<li>Frozen fruit works too!
