Waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PWD&rsquo;s Bureau of Lab Services helped complete the study of PFAS in local waters.\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/48431650521_85ae5546c6_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia Water Department Bureau of Laboratory Services helped complete the study of PFAS in local waters. <em class=\"inline-block\">Credit: photo by JPEG Photo &#038; Video, for PWD<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"big\"><strong>You may have heard about it in the news as a topic of national concern:<\/strong> PFAS is a group of man-made substances that were widely used for decades in firefighting foams, waterproof clothing, furniture, and food packaging.<\/p>\n<p>Initial research suggests certain types of PFAS\u2014a family of nearly 5,000 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/chemicals\/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances<\/a><\/strong>\u2014may be linked to health problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PFAS can be found everywhere on the planet<\/strong>: in the <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18200859\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environment<\/a>, in <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/chemicals\/questions-and-answers-pfas-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food<\/a>, in both <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/bottled-water\/bottled-water-brands-with-concerning-pfas-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tap and bottled water<\/a>, and in <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/health-effects\/us-population.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humans<\/a>. The widespread presence of these substances has led to a growing interest in research in the public health community.<\/p>\n<p>At the Philadelphia Water Department, our focus is on the potential presence of these chemicals in <em>your<\/em> drinking water\u2014and we\u2019re even <strong>looking for amounts as small as a <u>single grain of sugar<\/u><\/strong> in an <em>Olympic-sized<\/em> swimming pool.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info\">\n<h4 style=\"margin:0;border:0;\"><em>How small?<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><strong>For context:<\/strong> Drinking one gallon a day, it would take <strong>more than <em>1,800 years<\/em><\/strong> to consume the volume of water in an Olympic pool. Most people drink <strong>less than a gallon<\/strong> daily.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>PFAS is not currently among the approximately <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/2019-pwd-water-quality-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 contaminants<\/a> that safe <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dwreginfo\/drinking-water-regulations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drinking water regulations<\/a> require water providers like the Philadelphia Water Department to sample for. Nonetheless, in 2019, we voluntarily began proactive PFAS testing in the rivers and creeks supplying Philadelphia\u2019s drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"big\">The result: <strong>our study found no concentrations above the Environmental Protection Agency&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ground-water-and-drinking-water\/drinking-water-health-advisories-pfoa-and-pfos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health advisory level<\/a><\/strong> of 70 parts per trillion of PFOS and PFOA combined.<\/p>\n<p>We looked for PFOS and PFOA because those are the two most common types of PFAS found in our region. PFAS compounds were detected in local waterways, but at low levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have also had an independent look at our water.<\/strong> Studies separate from our work\u2014led by EPA and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection\u2014indicate <strong>non-detectable<\/strong> PFAS concentrations in Philadelphia\u2019s drinking water.<\/p>\n<h5>Read the full PWD report here:<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"top0\"><a class=\"btn btn-lg btn-primary white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/20201030-pfas-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PFAS Water Resources Characterization Study<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Ongoing Watershed Protection<\/h3>\n<p>PWD continues to test for PFAS in Philadelphia&#39;s waterways, collaborate with neighboring water utilities, and follow the latest scientific advancements and studies.<\/p>\n<p>Even though PFAS is a relatively new concern, PWD has long defended our rivers from the threat of pollution to ensure safe, high-quality drinking water.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>&#8220;We still have a lot to learn about PFAS,&#8221; <cite class=\"inline\">says Kelly Anderson, PWD&#39;s Watershed Protection Program Manager.<\/cite> &#8220;It&#39;s what we call an emerging contaminant, and fortunately we have a lot of experience in facing these challenges over the years by using the best available science.
