{"id":83,"date":"2018-12-12T17:05:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-12T22:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/falls-rd-cleanup-2018\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:47:17","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:47:17","slug":"falls-rd-cleanup-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/falls-rd-cleanup-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Eye-Popping Schuylkill Cleanup Ends Banner\u00a02018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">In a year that Philly <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanphl.org\/portfolio-item\/2018progressreport\/\">took a coordinated stand<\/a> against waste and litter, one sustained effort along the Schuylkill River stood out, ending 2018 with a bang\u2014<strong>the kind of bang you get after\u00a0dropping a <em>245-ton<\/em>\u00a0dumpster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#39;s the total tonnage Philadelphia Water Department crews, City partners, and volunteers\u00a0removed from a targeted\u00a0area near the Falls Bridge during four cleanup days\u00a0that\u00a0stretched\u00a0from late September\u00a0to the first weekend of December.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cleanup crew poses for a picture after a December volunteer event along the Schuylkill River\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/falls_before-after.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Volunteers pitched in to help remove over 244\u00a0tons of trash from a problem area along the Schuylkill.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It all started with a <strong>blockbuster three-day sweep<\/strong> that racked up<strong> 227 tons<\/strong> of waste in late September.<\/p>\n<p>On December 1, we joined volunteers and fellow City departments for a fourth cleanup day focusing on smaller debris, tires, and accumulated litter that was either dumped there or had blown into the area from surrounding neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>That event heaped another <strong>17.2 tons<\/strong> on for the <strong>244.9-ton\u00a0total<\/strong>, about what you would have <strong>if 32,700 Philly households each dumped a 15-pound bag of garbage along Falls Road<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We organized the massive cleanup effort after learning about a short-dumping site where construction debris, tires, and litter were piled high. Located near the Falls Bridge and very close to our two Schuylkill drinking water intakes, the discovery of the illegal trash along Falls Road launched an effort (spearheaded here\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bhjgb9thgMC\/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PWD Environmental Engineer Maria Horowitz<\/a>) to team up with City and private partners and take action.<\/p>\n<p>The workforce of people on the ground filing trash bags and trucks with litter and tires included citizen volunteers brought there through a three-year partnership our department has forged with the <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedbyblue.com\/blogs\/cleanups\/schuylkill-river-dumpsite-cleanup-phase-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philly-based outfitter United By Blue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 alone, United By Blue and PWD collaborated on 12 volunteer cleanups, with the December Falls Road event marking the\u00a0final collaboration\u00a0of the year.\u00a0The 17-plus tons collected that day made the annual total\u00a0of trash and recycling picked up by volunteers 422,324 pounds. (@phillyh2o)<\/a> on <time datetime=\"2018-03-06T22:49:13+00:00\" style=\" font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; line-height:17px;\">Mar 6, 2018 at 2:49pm PST<\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Volunteer cleanups, combined with regular efforts by our <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanphl.org\/portfolio-item\/water-departments-waterways-restoration-team-removes-over-1600-tons-of-trash-and-debris-from-philly-waterways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waterways Restoration Team<\/a>, resulted in the removal of nearly 3.2 million pounds of trash and debris from local creeks, rivers and their banks between July 2017 and June 2018.<\/p>\n<h2>Ending 2018 with an exclamation point<\/h2>\n<p>Even amid a boost in litter removal efforts stemming from PWD participation on the City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanphl.org\/portfolio-item\/water-departments-waterways-restoration-team-removes-over-1600-tons-of-trash-and-debris-from-philly-waterways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet<\/a>, the Falls Road cleanup was truly remarkable for the impact and the organizations who participated.<\/p>\n<p>Joining PWD on the City side were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/departments\/philadelphia-parks-recreation\/get-involved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parks and Recreation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiastreets.com\/events\/cleanup-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streets<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillypolice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police<\/a> Departments; private partners included United By Blue and Norfolk Southern, a rail company that manages\u00a0part of the site. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s a breakdown of the\u00a0totals for each phase:<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>Phase 1: September 27<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Removal of tires &#038; visible recyclable materials<\/li>\n<li>377 tires (11,000 pounds) removed from the site; recycled by Bridgestone Tires<\/li>\n<li>1.35 tons of recyclables and short dumping debris, removed by PWD\u2019s Waterways Restoration Team<\/li>\n<li>Total for Phase 1: <strong>6.85 tons removed<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>Phase 2: September 28\u201329<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Streets Department removes additional large debris with heavy machinery<\/li>\n<li>Total for Phase 2: <strong>220.85 tons removed by Streets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Phase 3:<\/strong> December 1<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>5 truckloads hauled out\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>31,620 pounds litter\/debris collected<\/li>\n<li>105 tires (approximate tire weight = 2,275 lbs.)<\/li>\n<li>Total for Phase 3: <strong>34,395 lbs (17.2 tons)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While much of the weight came from fill and gravel that accumulated with the debris and trash, the City plans to reuse that material as needed in projects like street repair.\u00a0Additional efforts to address railroad ties and equipment will be conducted in the upcoming months by Norfolk Southern, and PWD crews are planning more follow up work to continue restoring and rehabilitating this section of Fairmount\u00a0Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going forward:<\/strong> Access gates for the area now have new locks, and signage and barriers\u00a0have been errected and a\u00a0to deter more dumping.\u00a0PWD, Police, and Parks and Recreation and other departments\u00a0are\u00a0conducting additional litter surveillance around the site.<\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn btn-lg btn-primary white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/phillyh2o.info\/report-litter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to report illegal dumping \u203a<\/a><\/h5>\n<div class=\"callout lightgreen-bg\">\n<h3 class=\"white\"><strong>Tire Not:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tires are collected by volunteer at the Falls Road site in Fairmount Park. \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/tires.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"black\">The Falls Road cleanup netted 437 tires, bringing the total of tires PWD collected and recycled in 2018 to <strong>more than 1300<\/strong>. About 1200 of the discarded tires were given new life through\u00a0the <a class=\"bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgestoneamericas.com\/en\/corporate-social-responsibility\/environment-and-sustainability\/tires4ward-program-details\" style=\"color: #250;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridgestone Tires4ward<\/a> recycling program, which also works with community groups interested in removal. An additional\u00a0100\u00a0tires colleced at cleanups contained rims and were picked up by a company that creates tire-derived fuel for energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"black\">In addition to the Tires4ward program, the Streets Department and Philadelphia More Beautiful offer the <a class=\"bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiastreets.com\/sanitation\/residential\/tire-round-up-program\" style=\"color: #250;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tire Round-Up Program<\/a> to support community clean up efforts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Keep on Cleanin&#39;<\/h2>\n<p>As stewards of the city watersheds, we have long dedicated resources to removing harmful litter and trash from dumping from local rivers and creeks.<\/p>\n<p>Growing public awareness about the impact this type of pollution has on our environment has led to the robust volunteer presence we see at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PhillyWatersheds\/videos\/10156022742953791\/\" onclick=\"window.open(this.href, 'Whywevolunteer', 'resizable=yes,status=no,location=no,toolbar=no,menubar=no,fullscreen=no,scrollbars=no,dependent=no,width=1920,height=1080'); return false;\">PWD cleanups<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/loveyourpark.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love Your Park<\/a> (fall and spring!),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philadelphiastreets.com\/philly-spring-cleanup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Philly Spring Cleanup<\/a>, and in countless neighborhoods every weekend.
