By cultivating\u00a0their passion and offering hands-on learning, we gain passionate and invested employees who can grow to become nationally recognized experts in their fields.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h6>Read about Johanna Lopez-Lacayo, one of our newest Apprentices to officially become a PWD employee below, and learn how you or a hard-working student in your life could participate.<\/h6>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Johanna Lopez-Lacayo: Girls High to Green City<\/h2>\n<p class=\"big\">Born in Nicaragua and raised in Philadelphia, Johanna Lopez-Lacayo is blazing the trail for other young women as the first female apprentice to become a full-time PWD employee.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption half right\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Johanna Lopez-Lacayo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/johanna_lopez-lacayo_headshot.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Johanna Lopez-Lacayo is now the first female apprentice to promote to a permanent Civil Service title. Next up is a degree in\u00a0Engineering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Johanna attended <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/girlshs.philasd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia High School for Girls<\/a>, and credits an <strong>AP Environmental Science<\/strong> class with first sparking her interest in a water industry career. Luckily, her city is home to one of the world&#39;s most ambitious and celebrated green infrastructure initiatives: <em class=\"semibold\"><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/green-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green City, Clean Waters<\/a><\/em>, which completes <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/gccw10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its first decade this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After researching the <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> program, Johanna inquired about opportunities with PWD.<\/p>\n<p>She joined the <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/jobs\/apprenticeship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apprenticeship Program<\/a> in August of last year and began working in the <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwdplanreview.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utility Plan Review Group<\/a>. Johanna is now the <strong>first female apprentice to promote to a permanent Civil Service title<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While working at\u00a0PWD\u00a0with benefits and earning a steady income,\u00a0she is attending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccp.edu\/academic-offerings\/all-offerings?mefibs-form-gp-path-select-combine=Environmental&#038;mefibs-form-gp-path-select-field_acprg_gudpath_grp_tid%5B%5D=262&#038;mefibs-form-gp-path-select-mefibs_block_id=gp_path_select\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community College of Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0and plans to pursue a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what her favorite part of working for PWD is, Johanna points to the strong sense of camaraderie between employees.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really like a family,\u201d <cite class=\"inline-block\">she says.<\/cite> \u201cI wouldn\u2019t trade my team for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>What to Know: PWD Apprenticeship Program<\/h2>\n<p><strong>We\u00a0have used apprentices to fill a variety of positions throughout our 200-plus year history.<\/strong> The current iteration of the PWD Apprenticeship Program started in 2013 when the Department began its partnership with <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/powercorpsphl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PowerCorpsPHL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed video center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPhillyH2O%2Fvideos%2F564441730919126%2F&#038;width=720&#038;show_text=false&#038;appId=175648503185109&#038;height=400\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>This partnership, which continues to be a dedicated source for cultivating new talent, was initially focused on developing apprentices for full-time positions in the growing field of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnphiladelphia.org\/gsi-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green stormwater infrastructure<\/a> (GSI) maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks in part to the <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> program and the need to comply with state and federal regulations, stormwater management is the <u>fastest-growing career field<\/u> among our three core services: drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/jobs\/apprenticeship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PWD Apprenticeship Program<\/a> began expanding in 2017 to absorb additional career fields and is continuing to develop new partnerships with area educational institutions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-info third right accentblue-bg\" style=\"min-width: 12em;\">\n<h4>How to Apply<\/h4>\n<p class=\"black\">Apprentices and <a class=\"semibold darkblue\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/jobs\/students\/\">Interns<\/a> are a critical part of the Philadelphia Water Department workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"black\">To submit your information and apply for an Apprenticeship, fill out the form below.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"top0\"><a class=\"btn btn-lg btn-primary white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/jobs\/apprenticeship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apprenticeship<br \/>\nInterest Form<\/a><\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"top0\">Questions? That relationship will be critical to recruiting a new generation of water workers as the industry faces what is often referred to as the <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/waterandhealth.org\/safe-drinking-water\/drinking-water\/building-the-workforce-for-tomorrows-safe-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;gray tsunami&#8221;<\/a>\u2014a wave of pending retirements across the sector that threatens to <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Brookings-Metro-Renewing-the-Water-Workforce-June-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deplete decades of institutional knowledge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The overall intent of the Apprenticeship Program is to engage with local young adults graduating from high school or trade\/vocational school; within that effort, PowerCorpsPHL acts as a bridge to disconnected youth and returning residents. Once candidates are identified through our partners, our aim is to develop this local talent through the initial limited-term period of employment at PWD.<\/p>\n<h4>During the initial limited-term period, apprentices receive:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>On-the-job training in real-life situations<\/li>\n<li>One-on-one, personalized mentorship from an experienced employee<\/li>\n<li>Supplemental classroom training as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through these efforts, successful apprentices will be ready for critical, technical, and upwardly mobile careers with PWD.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Think you want to
