{"id":847,"date":"2021-10-15T14:04:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T18:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw-10-celebration\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:24:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:24:49","slug":"gccw-10-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw-10-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"Green City, Clean Waters &#8216;A Decade in the Community&#8217; Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"half floatleft mr1 mb1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/gccw10_stamp.png\" style=\"max-width: 180px;\" \/> This year marks the 10th year of <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/green-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/a>\u2014the City of Philadelphia\u2019s 25-year plan to improve local waterway health using primarily green stormwater systems backed by investments in traditional infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of this major milestone, we&#39;re hosting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/gccw10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters: A Decade in the Community<\/em><\/a><\/strong> on <strong>Thursday, October 21 from 4 to 7 p.m.<\/strong> outside of <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cranearts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crane Arts<\/a> and <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/1400+N+American+St,+Philadelphia,+PA+19122\/@39.9732532,-75.1425891,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c6c86dae3ba379:0xa29bc954703c9f32!8m2!3d39.9732491!4d-75.1404004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">along the 1400 block of North American Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#39;re invited to join us for this special event<\/strong>, which will also showcase the multi-agency <a class=\"semibold\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanstimprovementproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> American Street Improvement Project<\/a>. Streetscape improvements including more than four dozen stormwater infrastructure tools were completed through the federally backed project in May 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"semibold\">&#8220;It is truly spectacular what Philadelphia achieved within Green City, Clean Waters&#39; first 10 years,&#8221; <cite class=\"inline\">says Philadelphia Water Department Commissioner Randy E. Hayman, Esq.<\/cite> &#8220;We are making our precious waterways cleaner and bringing new, green life to our neighborhoods. There is still much work to do, but with the tremendous support we have witnessed from the people of this city, we know we can do it. We thank all who have helped us, and we look forward to what the next 15 years hold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/gccw10-illustrated-divider.png\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Green Tours for the Big 1-0<\/h2>\n<p>Tours of the American Street green upgrades will be a great way to see what <em>Green City,\u00a0Clean Waters<\/em> is all about.<\/p>\n<p>The revamped streetscape spans <strong>17 blocks<\/strong> and our new green features have the capacity to divert close to <strong>90 million gallons of stormwater annually<\/strong> from the area\u2019s combined sewer system. The green stormwater tools also play a role in street enhancements that improve pedestrian safety in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>The American Street stormwater infrastructure tools are among thousands of green systems added to city neighborhoods over the last decade.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed caption\">\n<div class=\"video embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/254219564?h=edb3d73749\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/254219564\">North American Street: Turning an old industrial corridor green<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/greentreks\">GreenTreks Network<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Citywide, <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> investments can reduce more than <strong>two billion gallons<\/strong> of stormwater from entering combined sewers during a year of typical rainfall. By reducing the volume of stormwater in combined sewers during storms, the City reduces overflows that impact the quality of local waterways.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/gccw10-illustrated-divider.png\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>It&#39;s About You<\/h2>\n<p>With our strong focus on building public support for this groundbreaking approach to improving the health of local waterways, <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> engaged more than <strong>400,000 Philadelphians<\/strong> in this clean water journey since launching in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>A big part of this celebration is about <strong>highlighting you<\/strong>: the people and partners we&#39;ve engaged in outreach.<\/p>\n<p>We hope you&#39;ll join us for the <strong>activities<\/strong>, green stormwater infrastructure <strong>tours<\/strong>, an official <strong>ribbon-cutting<\/strong> for the American Street Improvement Project, <strong>light refreshments<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> All City of Philadelphia COVID-19 guidance for in-person events will be adhered to.
