{"id":850,"date":"2021-12-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw10-celebration\/"},"modified":"2022-12-06T17:13:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T22:13:30","slug":"gccw10-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw10-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"Green City, Clean Waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"half floatleft mb1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/gccw10-badge.png\" style=\"max-width: 180px;\" \/>More than 200 \u2018green\u2019 enthusiasts of all ages convened in South Kensington\u00a0to celebrate the <strong>10th anniversary of <em class=\"ib\">Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, October 21st, the Water Department hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/gccw10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters:<\/em> A Decade in the Community<\/a> event outside of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cranearts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crane Arts<\/a> building on North American Street.<\/p>\n<p>Stretching from Girard to Indiana Avenues, <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/projects\/p50175\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the revamped streetscape spans <strong>17 blocks<\/strong> with green stormwater infrastructure (GSI)<\/a> that has the capacity to divert close to 90 million gallons of stormwater annually from the area\u2019s combined sewer system. To put that in perspective, this two-mile stretch can\u00a0capture the <em>equivalent of <strong>48 SEPTA buses<\/strong> full of stormwater\u00a0during a 1.5-inch rainstorm<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption half right\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/51628339986_92ea50e8ac_o.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the event, Katie Drake, a lead Water Dept. engineer on the American Street project, gives a tour of the new green stormwater infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With <strong>improvements spilling beyond stormwater management<\/strong>, this massive green project truly represents the transformative power of <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/green-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/a>, as multiple agencies worked closely together for the residents of Philadelphia to make this project possible.<\/p>\n<p>The green upgrades are encompassed in the federally-funded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanstimprovementproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Street Improvement Project<\/a>, which <strong>enlivens the once industrial corridor<\/strong> with bicycle\/pedestrian safety, more vegetation, and improved street lighting, sowing the seeds for a residential revitalization.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/651323854?h=9b64089303\" title=\"vimeo-player\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>From chalk art to GSI tours to sustainably-focused tables, the 10-year milestone celebration featured festivities for <strong>families and water warriors alike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The official American Street ribbon cutting was commenced by speeches from City representatives, including Philadelphia Water Department Commissioner <strong>Randy E. Hayman, Esq<\/strong>., Chief Engineer and President\/Board of Surveyors at Philadelphia Streets Department <strong>Darin L. Gatti<\/strong>, and <strong>Councilwoman\u00a0Maria Qui\u00f1ones-S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption half left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/51629201090_36204ff7dc_o.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Water Department Commissioner Randy E. Hayman kicks off the official American Street ribbon-cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Though implemented to help the City meet state and federal water quality standards, <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em> is so much more than that because of <strong>the additional benefits<\/strong> that come with a green approach,&#8221; <cite class=\"inline\">said\u00a0Commissioner Hayman.<\/cite> &#8220;This program allows us to <strong>educate<\/strong> the people we serve about why these investments are needed, and <strong>inspire <\/strong>Philadelphians by improving our city environmentally, socially, and economically.
