Water Dept. 2021 in Review\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2021 Marks a Decade of <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"half left mr1 mb1\" src=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/media\/static\/images\/2021\/03\/24\/gccw10-badge.png\" style=\"max-width: 180px;\" \/>Throughout 2021, we took on a major enterprise: <strong>capturing the last 10 years of <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/green-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>and celebrating all the PWD employees and partners who helped reach all of our goals for this critical milestone. By hitting our benchmarks, we are keeping billions of gallons of pollution out of waterways each year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/gccw10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em>: A Decade in the Community<\/a> explores the last 10 years through the lens of <strong>engagement, residents, businesses, jobs, and partnerships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Using blogs, research, videos, photos, graphics, and a dedicated campaign webpage, we tapped into the many talents of our colleagues (and partners) to produce a <strong>comprehensive and creative tribute to the first decade<\/strong> of this 25-year plan to restore our local waterways.<\/p>\n<p>And in October, <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw10-celebration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we brought the celebration to American Street<\/a>, where we hosted an official ribbon cutting for the site of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanstimprovementproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant green stormwater infrastructure project.<\/a><\/p>\n<h5><a class=\"btn-lg btn-primary white bold\" href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/gccw10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out the blog series!<\/a><\/h5>\n<div class=\"embed center video\" style=\"margin-top: 1em;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/528382822?h=9e67058544\" title=\"vimeo-player\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Philly Is in Running for EPA&nbsp;Loan for Water Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<p>In December, the <strong>U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)<\/strong> announced that the City of Philadelphia was selected to apply for a <strong>$246 million<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/wifia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan<\/a>. To date, the EPA has announced 63 WIFIA loans that are providing $12.7 billion in credit assistance to help finance approximately $26 billion for water infrastructure projects across the country, <strong>creating approximately 73,000 jobs and saving ratepayers over $4.5 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The loan would support improvements for Philadelphia&rsquo;s water infrastructure, including <strong>upgrades to treatment facilities, pumping stations, storage systems, and water main replacement<\/strong>. The proposed improvements included are all part of the larger <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/pwd-drinkingwatermasterplan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 Philadelphia Water Department Drinking Water Master Plan (WMP)<\/a>. The plan&mdash;which addresses operations, regulations, public engagement, and affordability&mdash;consists of <strong>400 inter-dependent projects<\/strong> aimed at upgrading the City&rsquo;s drinking water treatment and supply facilities.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>PWD Adds New Boat to Fleet<\/h3>\n<div class=\"caption half right\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/media\/static\/images\/2021\/12\/30\/pwd-and-drexel_removing-debris_10-12-2021_l-butler.JPG\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The small but important PWD fleet of boats got a new addition in 2021, adding a 28-foot vessel that can fit about 8 people. The boat can be used on the Delaware and Schuylkill and will assist in everything from trash and debris removal from hard-to-reach areas to infrastructure assessments, says Office of Watersheds Senior Scientist Lance Butler.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>&ldquo;The shoreline is unfortunately where we tend to see the most trash and litter, and this with this vessel you can really get close to the banks,&rdquo; <cite class=\"ib\">Butler says.<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With a front that drops down to make loading crew and equipment and offloading trash easier too, the new boat provides added flexibility operations on the water.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>&ldquo;This is a boat that will give us lots of options,&rdquo; <cite class=\"inline\">says Maria Horrowitz, Environmental Engineer and Watershed Field Services Manager.<\/cite> &ldquo;It&rsquo;s our swiss army knife of boats.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Water Quality Report Wins Data Prize<\/h3>\n<div class=\"caption half left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/media\/static\/images\/2021\/12\/28\/phone-and-email-1.png\" \/><\/div>\n<p>In January, <strong>PWD was the only utility<\/strong> among five winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterdataprize.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Water Data Prize<\/a>&mdash; a national competition challenging the drinking water industry to create more <strong>accessible approaches<\/strong> to scientific data. PWD clinched an honorable mention for a <a href=\"https:\/\/pwdstage.wpengine.com\/drops\/water-data-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retooled web version of the 2019 Water Quality Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong>Public Affairs Division partners with the Bureau of Laboratory Services<\/strong> each year to produce this <strong>important communication tool<\/strong>. Our most recent report is more accessible than ever. It&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available in print<\/a> and as <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/2020-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a mobile-friendly web edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>New Development Services Unit<\/h3>\n<p>This summer, we took a big step towards streamlining how we work with developers when we&nbsp;introduced the new Development Services Unit, which operates within our <strong>Planning and Environmental Services Division<\/strong>. It merges Utility Plan Review, Stormwater Plan Review, and related support groups <strong>to better serve development project needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With each new construction project in the City, developers must work with PWD to connect to the public water and sewer system, as well as manage stormwater. PWD regulates the development community <strong>to ensure the safety of our work and infrastructure for our customers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Treatment Plants Clinch National Awards<\/h3>\n<p>Our Water Pollution Control Plants have once again been recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacwa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA)<\/a> for demonstrating outstanding dedication to water sanitation and treatment. The <strong>Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant<\/strong> achieved a Platinum Peak Performance Award <strong>for 21 years of 100 percent compliance<\/strong> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/npdes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Protection Agency&rsquo;s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the <strong>Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant earned a Gold Award<\/strong> for NPDES permit compliance during 2020. These facilities&mdash;and the staff who operate them&mdash;<strong>work 24\/7 to ensure millions of gallons of wastewater are cleaned every day<\/strong> before being released back into the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/405521033?h=a9ff7200c7\" title=\"vimeo-player\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>PENNVEST Grant Given to Manayunk Canal<\/h3>\n<p>In July, the City <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.pa.gov\/pages\/pennvest-details.aspx?newsid=65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received a <strong>$20.9&nbsp;million loan<\/strong><\/a> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/dced.pa.gov\/programs\/pennsylvania-infrastructure-investment-authority-pennvest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST)<\/a> to demolish and rehabilitate portions of the Feeder Gate House and Canal Intake Channel Wall along the <a href=\"http:\/\/manayunk.com\/visit-us\/dsr\/plans-and-projects\/manayunk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manayunk Canal<\/a>. These improvements will provide major upgrades to the stormwater collection and conveyance systems. The project will address discharges of stagnant canal water, <strong>preventing pathogens, organics, and other contaminants<\/strong> from entering the City&#39;s water treatment system.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Commissioner and PWD honored at Globys<\/h3>\n<p>A few weeks ago, the <a href=\"http:\/\/globalphiladelphia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Philadelphia Association<\/a> honored<strong> Commissioner Randy E. Dozens of fish, including eel, perch, and catfish, were caught and released. The largest catch was a flathead catfish measuring <strong>more than 38 inches long!<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"549\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F178202755539335%2Fphotos%2Fa.545632442129696%2F6871297566229787%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Drink More Tap<\/em> Murals + Music<\/h3>\n<p>We continued our partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muralarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mural Arts Philadelphia<\/a> around <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/drink-more-tap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Drink More Tap<\/em><\/a>: a campaign using visual and performing arts to increase awareness of the benefits of drinking the city&rsquo;s top-quality tap water. <strong>(It&rsquo;s healthy, sustainable, and affordable!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project was inspired by <strong>tap water-consumption research<\/strong> conducted by PWD and<strong>&nbsp;ImpactED at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/strong> Results showed that Philadelphians <strong>with the least amount of money are spending the most on bottled water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the fall of 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/rosa-tap-murals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Drink More Tap<\/em> murals<\/a>, created by El Salvador-born artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muralarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calo Rosa<\/a>, were officially unveiled at Penrose Recreation Center and Cruz Recreation Center in <strong>North Philadelphia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed center\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUGSwl6gR4_\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; As a pilot member of the program, we were tasked with addressing a climate-related water challenge <strong>through the integration of arts and culture<\/strong> alongside other utilities, including <strong>Central Arkansas Water, Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, and Tucson Water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Our Public Affairs team joined forces with <a href=\"https:\/\/trapetamayson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trapeta B. Funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/williampennfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Penn Foundation<\/a>, several components were encompassed in this project, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/drinkphillytap.org\/ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ambassadors program<\/a> that had residents talking to their communities with facts about drinking water quality in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Penn received a grant to study the impacts of these ambassadors, as well as develop guidance for future ambassador programs. (Photo source: Fairmount Water Works)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountwaterworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">postponement<\/a> after Hurricane Ida, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountwaterworks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairmount Water Works<\/a>&#39; highly anticipated <a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountwaterworks.org\/blog\/2021\/12\/fairmount-water-works-pledges-restoration-and-resiliency-in-wake-of-historic-flooding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">POOL exhibit will be returning<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwaterday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Water Day<\/a>, <strong>March 22, 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poolphl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairmount Water Works&#39; POOL<\/a> is a multi-disciplinary art exhibition exploring the social history and present-day implications of <strong>segregated swimming pools<\/strong> in America. Visitors can expect an immersive experience, including rarely seen archival film footage and photographs. <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/drops\/pool-a-history-of-social-segregation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Big Step for Floating Workshop<\/h3>\n<p>In other big Water Works news, our education center really ended the year on a high note when&nbsp;Pennsylvania Senator Nikil Saval announced The Fund for the Water Works <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pasenate.com\/senator-saval-announces-39-5-million-in-grants-for-local-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as a $3 million recipient<\/a><\/strong> of a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to develop The Floating Water Workshop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The proposed Floating Water Workshop design features a 5,400-square-foot dynamic learning space that would rest on the Schuylkill River, connecting to the east bank and Schuylkill River Trail using two gangways just south of the historic Fairmount Water Works site. The Workshop will be a learning laboratory of hands-on STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) engagement for people of all ages using current environmental education strategies, technology, and creativity.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>PWD Staff Selected for Duke University Fellowship<\/h3>\n<p>In December, two PWD employees, <strong>Nafissa Bizo<\/strong>, Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant Manager, and <strong>Kelly Anderson<\/strong>, Watershed Protection Program Manager, were selected as <strong>2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/nicholas.duke.edu\/news\/18-emerging-leaders-water-services-named-fellows-dukes-wild-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fellows of the Duke Water Innovation Leadership Development Program<\/a><\/strong>&mdash;a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/execed\/water-innovation-leadership-development-program\/?_ga=2.36809896.923812729.1640618150-417397224.1640618150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cohort-based executive education program<\/a> designed for rising leaders in water services management.<\/p>\n<p>Annual enrollment in the program is limited to between 15 to 20 Fellows to optimize the learning environment.
