{"id":857,"date":"2022-03-31T23:58:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T03:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/stormwater-grants-fy22\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:11:49","slug":"stormwater-grants-fy22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/stormwater-grants-fy22\/","title":{"rendered":"2021-2022 Stormwater Grant Awardees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">For the past decade, we\u2019ve incentivized Philly-based businesses, schools, and other organizations to help restore local waterways by making green improvements right on their properties.<\/p>\n<p>Through our keystone <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/stormwater\/incentives\/grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stormwater Grants Program<\/a>, we\u2019ve helped bring <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green stormwater infrastructure (GSI)<\/a> projects to existing properties around the city, greening sites, decreasing monthly water bills, and reducing combined sewer overflow pollution in our creeks and rivers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption half left\" style=\"margin-top: .5em;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/24303495757\/in\/album-72157663810769668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nestled into a corner where two sections of the brick building meet, a newly planted rain garden and young tree bask in rays of sunshine.\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4601\/24303495757_c6902d0c9c_c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of four rain gardens Bethesda Presbyterian Church installed with the help of a Stormwater Grant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the past 10 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw10-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than $158 million in grants<\/a> have been given to non-residential properties across the city to install green stormwater infrastructure. To date, <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/gccw10-business#:~:text=Nearly%2030%25%20of%20the%20Greened%20Acres%20implemented%20to%C2%A0date%20were%20made%20possible%20by%20non%2Dresidential%20properties%20taking%20advantage%20of%20our%20Stormwater%20Incentives.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 30 percent of the Greened Acres implemented through <em>Green City, Clean Waters<\/em><\/a> were made possible by non-residential properties taking advantage of our <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/stormwater\/incentives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stormwater Incentives<\/a>, including the Grants Program.<\/p>\n<p>In order to meet Philadelphia\u2019s 25-year goal of reducing at least 85 percent of combined sewer overflow pollution by 2036, an innovative community of organizations with diverse stormwater solutions will have to step up\u2014and this year\u2019s awardees represent that vision.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re proud of the variety of organizations and property owners who successfully applied for grants in 2021. Whether a Mt. Airy church or a Hunting Park community center, a broad spectrum of applicants took advantage of what we had to offer this round.<\/p>\n<p>In total, 11 recipients collectively received $17 million in grants to support properties that will manage more than 70 Greened Acres (GA)!<\/p>\n<h2>Raising the (Green) Roof<\/h2>\n<div class=\"caption third right\" style=\"min-width: 40%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philadelphiawater\/albums\/72157647012030888\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"looking down on part of a building with multipe sections of roof at different levels, most of which are covered with plants\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3865\/15191186705_3fb40b68a0_c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The University of Pennsylvania&#39;s Law School building, Golkin Hall, has seven green roofs all working together to regulate stormwater in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This year, two of the properties will receive support to create <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\/tools\/green-roof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018green\u2019 roofs<\/a> \u2014 a vegetated roof designed to reduce the volume and velocity of stormwater runoff by temporarily storing stormwater, slowing excess stormwater release, and promoting evaporation.<\/p>\n<p>Tioga Business Center in the Fairhill neighborhood is one of the awardees using grant funds to help in installing a green roof. In fact, the new installation may be the largest green roof in the tri-state area, based on the project team\u2019s research.<\/p>\n<p>The property was originally built in the early 1950s to serve as the headquarters of Philco Electronics, a trailblazing company in battery, radio, and television production.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the building is home to a couple of businesses, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casepaper.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Case Paper<\/a>. The new green roof will encompass more than 11 Greened Acres\u2014with each Greened Acre managing nearly 30,000 gallons of runoff during a one-inch rainstorm!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to award green roof grants this year,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says Beth Anne Lutes, PWD\u2019s Stormwater Billing and Incentives Manager.<\/cite> \u201cGreen Roofs are a great stormwater tool for properties that don\u2019t have a lot of space to manage stormwater beyond the building footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Going SEP-TAINABLE!<\/h2>\n<p>Our sustainability efforts this year spill past waterway restoration and into public transportation. One of this year\u2019s awardees is the large SEPTA bus maintenance facility at 3rd and Wyoming in North Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year Green City, Clean Waters plan aligns with SEPTA\u2019s own environmental missions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the public transit organization launched <em><a href=\"https:\/\/septa.org\/sustain\/pdf\/septainable11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEP-TAINABLE: The Route to Regional Sustainability<\/a><\/em>, a comprehensive multi-year plan aiming towards \u201cbuilding a more sustainable SEPTA and a more sustainable region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the goals includes incorporating stormwater management features into capital projects to reduce runoff and decrease annual stormwater fees.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cEffective stormwater management has been a cornerstone of SEPTA\u2019s sustainability planning for more than a decade, including 17 new Greened Acres at stations and facilities since 2015,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">SEPTA said in a statement highlighting the grant.<\/cite> \u201cThe Wyoming Stormwater Retrofits Project will create an additional 20 Greened Acres, reinforcing SEPTA\u2019s triple bottom line, and improving local water quality. SEPTA is proud to partner with the Philadelphia Water Department on this effort and others that are delivering real benefits to the communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new surface basin at the Wyoming Avenue site will create 20 Greened Acres\u2014\u2014 the largest in this year\u2019s list of recipients, allowing SEPTA to soak up over half a million gallons during a one-inch storm.<\/p>\n<h2>Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education<\/h2>\n<p>Serving as one of the first environmental centers in the United States, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schuylkillcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education<\/a>, established in 1965, works to inspire \u201cmeaningful connections\u201d between nature and people of all ages\u2014from preschool students to adults.<\/p>\n<p>Encompassing forests, fields, and waterways, the Roxborough-based facility will be adding a rain garden to its 340-acre ecosystem in Northwest Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"semibold\">\n<p>\u201cThis project will be a true cross-sector collaboration between private companies, nonprofits, governmental agencies, and community volunteers that will provide both practical benefits and a real-world model for handling urban stormwater in a natural setting,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says Casey Darnley, Director of Development at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.<\/cite> \u201cWe hope this project can serve as an educational site for the community and peer organizations. We greatly appreciate PWD&#39;s support to make this long-awaited project a reality!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a grassy courtyard surrounded by 18th century buildings\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/historic-germantown_after.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/historicgermantownpa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic Germantown<\/a> used their Stormwater Grant to depave and transform their asphalt-covered courtyard and parking lot into a welcoming community green space &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/historic-germantown-green-upgrade-wins-pioneers-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receive the 2018 Stormwater Pioneers Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Greening Neighborhoods<\/h2>\n<p>Stormwater Grants can also be an opportunity to bring green to unexpected places: Several applications were awarded because the proposals prioritized planting vegetation on properties in communities lacking green spaces.<\/p>\n<p>A parking lot of a shopping center in the Whitman section of South Philadelphia will plant trees, along with a subsurface basin and depaving, which will collectively manage more than six Greened Acres.
