{"id":860,"date":"2022-06-13T15:43:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T19:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/16th-police-gsi\/"},"modified":"2022-12-03T11:10:53","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T16:10:53","slug":"16th-police-gsi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/blog\/16th-police-gsi\/","title":{"rendered":"PWD embarks on partnership with Philadelphia Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"big\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillypolice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Police Department<\/a> project to revamp the 16th District headquarters at 39th Street and Lancaster Avenue is protecting and serving\u2026 our waterways.<\/p>\n<p>While we collaborate with an array of Philly-based organizations and City agencies, this is our <strong>first time joining forces with the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD)<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/departments\/department-of-public-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Public Property\u00a0(DPP)<\/a> on a large-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\/\">Green Stormwater Infrastructure\u00a0(GSI)<\/a> installation that also reinvests in buildings and structures where City employees work and where City equipment is housed.<\/p>\n<p>As the first official PWD project on a PPD site, this endeavor is a <strong>model for future PPD greening projects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Greening the Plaza + Modernizing the Parking\u00a0Lot<\/h2>\n<div class=\"caption half left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"This rendering shows a short set of stairs in front of the entrance on the right side of a brick building and the new ramp spanning the rest of the front below a row of windows, a triangular stormwater planter in front of the left side, and some trees and shrubs visible along the left side of the building.\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/static\/ppd-16th-rendering_uNvVzQX.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rendering of completed work at 16th\u00a0Police <span class=\"inline-block\">District Headquarters<\/span> <em class=\"inline-block\">(Image credit: Stantec Consulting Services\u00a0Inc)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Our work is building on momentum, led by PPD and DPP, to revamp the station\u2019s <strong>indoor and outdoor facilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The revitalized outdoor area will include a new <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\/tools\/stormwater-planter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stormwater planter<\/a> in the front, which will welcome visitors to the 16th District headquarters with <a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\/tools\/subsurface-trench\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsurface storage crates<\/a> below a newly renovated parking lot in the rear. These upgrades will <strong>prevent polluted water from entering our creeks and rivers<\/strong>, while also greening and beautifying the block.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;It&#39;s a win-win when we can prioritize both capital upgrades and stormwater greening at City facilities and parking lots,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says PWD City Planner Amy Liu.<\/cite> \u201cWith DPP, PPD and the Fire Department, we will continue to develop innovative partnership strategies to co-invest on public safety sites while complementing safety and community outreach needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>GSI Features<\/h3>\n<p>A large infiltration basin below the rear parking lot of the headquarters bounded by Sloan, Union, and Warren Streets.<\/p>\n<p>A small stormwater planter with subsurface storage trench (and ADA ramp) in front of the headquarters, located where North 39th Street, Lancaster Avenue, and Spring Garden Street meet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption half right\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the parking lot takes up the majority of a triangular block formed by Warren, Sloan, and Union Streets. That adds up to 4.5 Greened Acres, with each Greened Acre managing nearly 30,000 gallons of stormwater runoff during a one-inch rainstorm \u2014 or about a <strong>SEPTA bus-sized load of polluted water!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the installation of <strong>stormwater-capturing crates<\/strong>, the parking lot behind the police station will be repaved and manage <strong>more than 92,000 gallons of stormwater<\/strong> per typical storm event.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/gsi\/tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about the green tools planned for this project\u00a0\u2192<\/a><\/h5>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;PWD&#39;s green stormwater infrastructure improvements will give us a new space to share with members of our community,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">says 16th Police District Captain Chanta Herder.<\/cite> \u201cIf we are to be successful in achieving our goals of crime prevention and violence reduction, community engagement and inclusion must be at the top of the 16th District priority list.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With these green additions contributing to long-term improvement of the outdoor space, the district says it can even expand its successful events, such as <strong>job fairs, free haircuts, clothing drives, movie nights, and community days!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Police District Building Improvements<\/h2>\n<p>Separate from the stormwater features, the City is also implementing major improvements to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillypolice.com\/districts\/16th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16th Police District Headquarters<\/a> building.<\/p>\n<p>The headquarters is planning significant renovations, including replacing a steep set of stairs with an <strong>Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible ramp<\/strong> that would make it both easier and safer to enter the building. Herder says the district always strives to ensure the facility is <strong>maintained, clean, and staffed by the very best<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe 16th District couldn\u2019t be more excited to partner with PWD on this exciting new venture,\u201d <cite class=\"inline\">Herder says.<\/cite> \u201cWorking collaboratively with PWD will ensure the residents of 16th District receive the highest levels of service. The last two years have been hard. The Philadelphia Police Department recognizes that we can\u2019t be successful without the community\u2019s\u2019 trust and partnership. It is my hope that a partnership with PWD will greatly improve our reach to the community we serve by giving us a new and improved space to share with them. Temporary \u201cNo Parking\u201d signs will be installed as needed for safety and construction. Signs will be installed before the start of work indicating the dates and hours that the areas will be closed. Vehicular traffic, pedestrian access, trash collection and deliveries will be maintained. Any cars left on streets where work is scheduled to take place will be towed to a nearby public street.
