Over the weekend, hikers in the Wissahickon Valley Park alerted authorities about bright green water in a small stream leading to the Wissahickon Creek. Some alarmed trail users also posted photos to social media. There are no impacts on drinking water quality or local wildlife. See our statement for more information:

“The Philadelphia Water Department responded to a reported street cave-in on the 200 block of Rex Avenue on Saturday, May 10. Fluorescein, a nontoxic fluorescent dye, was used to investigate the source of the leak. While some of the diluted dye eventually made its way to a small Wissahickon Creek tributary, the public should know that this dye is harmless. There are no impacts on wildlife or drinking water quality. Anyone who sees a potential spill should call the Water Department 24/7 at (215) 685-6300 immediately and report it as an emergency.”
