We want you to get involved! The Philadelphia Water Department provides many opportunities for you to learn about water and play a part in the health of our rivers and streams, the source of your drinking water.

Public Education

The Philadelphia Water Department emphasizes the importance of public education about Philadelphia’s water history, current water infrastructure, and individuals’ connection to water. Providing environmental education and stewardship opportunities allows customers to play a positive role in the health of our waterways and watersheds.

Schools

Storm Drain Marking School groups (and anyone else!) can help protect our city’s waterways from pollution by placing storm drain markers in your neighborhood.   GreenSTEM Network The greenSTEM Network connects students to the environment by monitoring and mining data from schoolyard gardens and green stormwater infrastructure. 

History

The Philadelphia Water Department has been providing water to citizens since 1801, when the city decided it needed a source of water to cleanse the streets, fight fires, and for household purposes.
