Lardner's Point Pump Station Replacement

Current Phase:

Start:

Late 2025

Completion:

Mid 2034

Overview

This project replaces the aging Lardner’s Point Pump Station with a modern, sustainable, multi-use facility. This project upgrades the Lardner’s Point Pump Station to improve water delivery in Northeast Philadelphia. Pump stations help move clean drinking water through the system and maintain stable water pressure for customers. Essential equipment, including pumps, pipes, and electrical systems keep water flowing across the city.

Lardner’s Point Pump Station (LPPS) has been a vital part of Philadelphia’s drinking water system since the early 1900s. LPPS was originally built as the city’s main pump station. Now, LPPS is one of several major stations and remains the largest finished water pumping station in Philadelphia. On any given day, it helps deliver over 30% of the city’s drinking water. LPPS moves clean water from the Baxter Water Treatment Plant into the distribution system.

LPPS serves several key areas, including a large part of Northeast Philadelphia. Despite its critical role, the facility has seen only minor renovations since the 1960s. Now it’s nearing the end of its useful life.

We are planning to construct a new, sustainable pump station to replace the Lardner’s Point facility. The project includes new yard piping and transmission mains, as well as the development of a green stormwater operations facility. We also plan to preserve the existing historic pump station building for future use.

These upgrades will improve water pressure reliability, increase efficiency, and better manage stormwater.
