42nd Street Pump Station Replacement

Current Phase:

Start:

early 2027

Overview

In order to maintain core services and increase processing capacity, the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) will construct a new Pump Station at 765 S. 43rd St. in the Spruce Hill neighborhood.

During construction, an assigned PWD inspector and engineer will be on-site and can answer questions about the work.

Key Improvements

In Philadelphia, wastewater and stormwater are connected. Some areas of Philadelphia use a combined system for both sewage and rainwater. During heavy rain, too much water enters the system, causing overflows into waterways. By managing stormwater, we help prevent water pollution from sewer overflows. Philadelphia is required by regulations to reduce this type of pollution.

This pump station will help reduce sewer overflows from the Mill Creek sewer into the Schyulkill River, helping PWD to meet federal requirements for reducing pollution. It will also make PWD’s stormwater and wastewater systems more resilient.

The new systems that will be built can recognize wet weather and be better prepared for severe weather, improving PWD’s response during dry weather and during large storms. By raising equipment up, this pump station will be less vulnerable to flooding in extreme weather events.
