Queen Lane Raw Water Pump Station Upgrades

Overview

This project upgrades the Queen Lane Raw Water Pump Station. This pump station sends unfiltered water from the Schuylkill River to the Queen Lane Water Treatment Plant. There, the water is cleaned and made safe for the public before being distributed throughout the city. The pump station includes essential equipment – pumps, pipes, and electrical systems – that keep clean water flowing.

The Queen Lane Raw Water Pump Station was originally built in the early 1900’s. Since then, the pump station has undergone some upgrades to maintain and replace equipment. Yet, the aging equipment is reaching the end of its useful life. Additionally, the pump station is next to the Schuylkill River in an area that frequently floods. This work will prevent flooding emergencies and modernize the pump station with new equipment.

We’re completing these improvements through multiple projects:

Project #64072:

• Installing emergency power generators
• Elevating new electrical equipment above the FEMA 500-year flood level.

Project #64122:

• Replacing pumps, piping, and electrical systems that are nearing the end of their service life.

Project #64092:

• Improving the raw water intake and piping alongside the Queen Lane Water Treatment Plant Replacement. The details of this project are still being finalized.

These upgrades will make the system more reliable, easier to maintain, and more climate resilient.

Why are we doing these projects?

This critical pump station has provided water to the Queen Lane Water Treatment Plant for over 100 years. New generators and elevated electrical equipment will make the pump station more resilient to intense storms and flooding. Additionally, new pumps, piping, and mechanical systems will replace the current, aging equipment. These improvements ensure a consistent supply of clean water to our Queen Lane Water Treatment Plant for years to come.
