George's Hill Pump Station construction

Overview

We’re building a brand new drinking water pump station nearby the site of the former George’s Hill Reservoir in West Fairmount Park.

Pump stations contain powerful motorized pumps, pipes, valves, and electrical equipment to move water through the distribution system. They create water pressure to ensure adequate pressure at our taps and to support the important work of firefighters.

The new George’s Hill Pump Station will support a steady, reliable supply of drinking water to several West Philly neighborhoods:

• Wynnefield Heights
• Wynnefield
• Overbrook
• Overbrook Farms
• Overbrook Park
• Carroll Park
• Haddington

Why are we doing this project?

Currently, several West Philly neighborhoods are served by only one pump station. This project will add a second pump station. Adding a second pump station will create system redundancy by providing more than one way to generate the pressure needed to deliver drinking water to these neighborhoods. Having redundancy means that if one part of the system fails, other parts can still provide safe, clean drinking water to our communities.

What to expect during construction

During construction, a project inspector will be on-site and can answer questions about the work. Contact information is provided below.

Some trees need to be removed to make space for the new pump station. Residents can expect to see crews operating machinery to prepare the foundation of the new pump station. After construction, dozens of new trees and native plants will be planted. Two rain gardens will be installed to help filter rainwater during storms.

Construction is scheduled to start in November 2026. Construction dates may be subject to change.
