Somerton Transmission Piping

Current Phase:

Start:

Estimated Early 2025

Completion:

Estimated Early 2026

Overview

We’re enhancing water quality at the Somerton Standpipes through a two-phase initiative.

Project #20650, Phase 1: New Transmission Main

Below the ground, big pipes called water mains move clean drinking water. The water moves from treatment plants to all the places that need it, like homes and businesses. There are two kinds of water mains: transmission mains and distribution mains.

Transmission mains are the largest pipes. They act like highways for moving water over long distances. Transmission mains connect treatment plants to pump stations and tanks.

Phase 1 will install roughly 3,800 feet of new transmission mains. These mains will go along Tomlinson Road in the Somerton neighborhood, Northeast Philadelphia. Construction work will be between Bustleton Ave. and Greiner Rd.

Project #64114, Phase 2: Piping at Somerton Standpipes

We have storage facilities distributed across the city. They hold water until needed for reliable service and pressure. Standpipes are one type of storage facility.

Phase 2 will install new piping from the Somerton Standpipes. This piping will establish separate inlet and outlet pipes, improving water flow efficiency. Currently, there is a single pipe for both functions. Separating these pipes will convert the standpipes into tanks.

This work will improve water quality by shortening water age in Northeast Philadelphia.

The Water Department will have an assigned engineer and inspector for the project, who will be on-site every day. For on-site problems/questions about the work, please talk with the inspector or engineer on the job site.

Customers may experience limited water interruptions during construction. All dates are subject to change.
